about
The Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association was founded in 1917 and incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1965 as a voluntary organization. During this period of over 80 years, women from all social strata have contributed their voluntary support towards achieving the aims and objectives of the SLGGA and to bring the organization to its present level. In the early years the Association concentrated on character development of girls and young women and on Community Development, such as Nutrition, Health, Safe Water and Sanitation and Welfare of Pregnant Mothers among disadvantaged communities, towards up lifting the quality of life in many rural villages of Sri Lanka. Later, the Association while still concentrating on the development of girls and young women, widened its focus from community service to community development around the country. ‘The Girl Child’ and HIV/AIDS are now some of the ongoing programmes. This is the only organization, which can conduct trainings for school children as it has the authority from the Ministry of Education.
