As per requested by the Uva provincial Girl Guide commissioner, we conducted two awareness programs for Mahiyanagana Girl Guides, Non guides, preschool teachers and Sunday school teachers on 25th and 26th of October, 2009. Currently there is no major issue on waste disposing in particular area due to sufficient spaces in each home garden. Even though they are expecting to face a problem of waste with a rapid progress and urbanization.
On the first day there were around 200 participants of preschool teachers and Sunday school teachers. With a high number of participants we could be able make them understand how they have to face to garbage problem in very near future. A Buddhist monk who participated as Sunday school teacher appreciated our effort and requested us to concentrate more on the first two concepts (Reduce and Reuse) in 3R, because those are more related with the life style of our old relatives.
Local authority of Mahiyangana doesn’t have a proper collection system for collecting separated waste. Because of that going for a recycling step is an advance to them. Create a sustainable environment through the application of Reduce and Reuse is a practical thing to their life.
Our effort was to make them aware to separate their day today waste in to bio degradable and non bio degradable. They agreed to make compost from Bio degradable waste with using jeewa kotuwa while they didn’t have a proper solution for what to do with non biodegradables. We suggested collect and store them for some period of time and arranging a “kasala pola” and sell them to make some money on school level.
